Hand-cut paper sculpture from digital prints of vintage maps of California

This piece was commissioned for the Stanford University Children’s Hospital. It is hand-cut from archival digital prints of vintage California maps.
The artwork features a mix of hummingbirds and butterflies hovering above a delicate botanical landscape. The maps feature bright colors which create the textures of the wings of the wildlife and the leaves below. By combining the familiar cartography of California with this magical, colorful ecosystem, I created a piece that embodies the spirit of its title, “We love life.”
