Going For Gold
2024
Hand-cut paper sculpture from a vintage geological map of New Mexico.
62 cm h x 52 cm w / 24″ h x 20″ w

This piece is hand-cut from a vintage geological map of the Dos Lomas Quadrangle, spanning Valencia and McKinley Counties in New Mexico.

The title playfully references the dominant yellow and golden hues of the map’s original cartography, which Brewster has used to texture the wings of the birds. The composition features a lively flock of birds surrounding a central cluster of cut-paper foliage. The map’s topographic lines and earthy palette—mixing golds with soft browns and greens—evoke the arid beauty of the New Mexico landscape while capturing the energy of nature in flight..
