I wanna Fly So Bad
2025
Hand-cut paper sculpture from a vintage Geologic map (Centre Deer Creek Quadrangle, Lincoln County, Wyoming)
61 cm h x 59 cm w / 24.2″ h x 23.4″ w
This piece is meticulously hand-cut from a vintage Geologic map of the Centre Deer Creek Quadrangle in Lincoln County, Wyoming.
The artwork captures the frenetic energy of a flock of hummingbirds darting around a central cluster of botanical foliage. The map’s original topographic lines and earthy tones texture the birds’ wings, grounding their flight in the geological history of the Wyoming landscape. By liberating these birds from the flat surface of the map, I explore the tension between the static nature of cartography and the boundless freedom of the natural world.
