Grandma’s Hands
collage and painting on card
40 cm h x 30 cm

I created Grandma’s Hands using collage and acrylic paint on card.I used a mixture of gold and white paint applied in layers of dots.

I’m fascinated by identity and how it changes as we age. How we mask it our identities to fit in with others expectations.

I think of it as an anti-portrait. All the features that would make a person recognisable are gone. Yet is still resolutely human.

The piece is inspired by the son Grandma’s Hands, it was written by Bill Withers but my favourite version is by Barbara Streisand. I’m fascinated by the expressive nature of hands and how they can express our personality and life experiences.
