The wonder of Matisse
When I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago we went to the Foundation Louis Vuitton in the bois de boulogne. I didn’t really know what to expect but it was really worth the trip.
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and obviously we weren’t the only people who decided to visit the museum. We had to queue for about 30 mins, so I’d recommend booking in advance!
The current exhibition is Icons of Modern Art, The Shchukin Collection. We hadn’t really looked what was on so didn’t really know what to expect. But it was a real treat.
Shchukin was one of the major collectors of French Modern Art in the early 20th Century (click here for the website)
It was the first time that the 130 paintings in the exhibition had been shown together since the collection was split up in the 1940’s. So it was quite something.
Shchukin was a man of excellent taste.
Last year I read a biography of Matisse so was familiar with his relationship with Shchukin but I hadn’t imagined that there would be so many Matisse’s in the show.
What a happy surprise! It was so amazing to see so many iconic Matisse paintings all together in one room. I’m a huge fan.
Here are a few of my favourites. It was quite hard to get photos as there were so many people.
So much amazingness. The colours, the compositions just everything. I’m so grateful that I got to see them after seeing them in books.
The Louis Vuitton Foundation building is pretty amazing as well.
Really stunning, We were lucky to catch it on such a beautiful day.
And we met a very sassy white peacock!
