I was thinking of Shakespeare when I made this piece, I don’t often think about Shakespeare but it was probably this quote:

‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’

from Romeo and Juliet that was looming somewhere in my subconscious. It’s part of my cultural conditioning, something that I know, but don’t remember actively knowing it.

I’m always fascinated by what my subconscious holds, so often when I want to access something it doesn’t play ball and then at random times facts will appear.

When I’m making art it feels like my subconscious is speaking directly to me, if I can clear all the other chatter away (I’m looking at you iphone) the ideas can flow and things appear and float in to my consciousness that I was never expecting.

Hence the Shakespeare reference.

This gorgeous rose is cut from an old RAF map of Great Britain and perhaps there’s a stored memory in the fibres of the paper that I was tapping into when I started cutting it.
