Drawing

Drawing is such a large part of what I do. I love drawing more than anything else. I spend the most time doing it. Before I get anywhere near a map and a knife I spend a lot of time working on the drawing.

I’m trying to capture the essence of my subject matter and repeatedly drawing it is my way of doing this. I really begin to understand the subject matter and can really feel it. Once I’ve reached this point I can then move on to the next stage.

Sometimes I will draw some thing several times only to scrap all the drawings and go back to the original drawing. Sometimes I’ll spend weeks on something only for it to be consigned to the no pile. Other times I draw something once and find what I’m looking for immediately and go straight on to the cutting stage. I can never tell. It’s always an adventure.

Here are a few drawings I’ve been working on recently.
